Classic Churros with Powdered Sugar

Ingredients:

For the Churros:

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 quarts vegetable oil for frying

For Coating:

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions:

1. Preparing the Dough:

  1. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the water, sugar, salt, and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Bring to a boil and remove from heat.
  2. Stir in the flour until the mixture forms a ball.

2. Shaping the Churros:

  1. Heat oil for frying in a deep-fryer or deep skillet to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Transfer the dough to a pastry bag fitted with a large star tip.
  3. Pipe strips of dough into the hot oil, about 4-6 inches long, and fry until golden brown and crispy, about 2 minutes per side.

3. Coating the Churros:

  1. In a shallow dish, combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon (if using).
  2. Roll the fried churros in the sugar mixture to coat.

4. Serving:

  1. Place the churros on a serving plate.
  2. Dust with powdered sugar.
  3. Serve immediately while warm.

5. Storing:

  1. Refrigeration: Churros are best enjoyed fresh, but any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven to regain crispiness.
  2. Freezing: Freeze the shaped, uncooked dough. When ready to serve, fry directly from frozen, adding a couple of extra minutes to the frying time.

Tips:

  • For an indulgent treat, serve the churros with a side of melted chocolate or caramel sauce for dipping.
  • Ensure the oil temperature remains consistent while frying to achieve even cooking.
  • If you don’t have a pastry bag, you can use a plastic bag with a corner cut off.
