Classic Churros with Powdered Sugar
Ingredients:
For the Churros:
- 1 cup water
- 2 1/2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 quarts vegetable oil for frying
For Coating:
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
- Powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions:
1. Preparing the Dough:
- In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the water, sugar, salt, and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Bring to a boil and remove from heat.
- Stir in the flour until the mixture forms a ball.
2. Shaping the Churros:
- Heat oil for frying in a deep-fryer or deep skillet to 375°F (190°C).
- Transfer the dough to a pastry bag fitted with a large star tip.
- Pipe strips of dough into the hot oil, about 4-6 inches long, and fry until golden brown and crispy, about 2 minutes per side.
3. Coating the Churros:
- In a shallow dish, combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon (if using).
- Roll the fried churros in the sugar mixture to coat.
4. Serving:
- Place the churros on a serving plate.
- Dust with powdered sugar.
- Serve immediately while warm.
5. Storing:
- Refrigeration: Churros are best enjoyed fresh, but any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven to regain crispiness.
- Freezing: Freeze the shaped, uncooked dough. When ready to serve, fry directly from frozen, adding a couple of extra minutes to the frying time.
Tips:
- For an indulgent treat, serve the churros with a side of melted chocolate or caramel sauce for dipping.
- Ensure the oil temperature remains consistent while frying to achieve even cooking.
- If you don’t have a pastry bag, you can use a plastic bag with a corner cut off.
